The Banyan tree is a botanical marvel.  As the main trunk of the tree is established, its massive limbs spread horizontally.  These limbs develop auxiliary roots that descend down, take root in the soil and become supporting trunks. These secondary trunks send out new branches sending down more auxiliary roots.  Spreading in this way, a single banyan tree can spread laterally indefinitely.
